National Honors Society

Reflecting school leaders’ profound commitment to student leadership development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) founded NHS in 1921 based on the four pillars of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. National Honor Society (NHS) membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Students who have a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher following their 3rd semester of high school (middle of 10th grade year) are invited to apply to be a part of the Billings Senior High School NHS. When invited, students are given an application in which they need to acquire three teacher signatures who will then serve as references for the student. These teachers then rate the students on a scale of 1-4 for each of the remaining pillars of NHS (leadership, character, and service). Once the scores are received, the NHS advisers average the scores with the inclusion of the student’s weighted GPA. If the student receives a minimum score of 3.5, and if they have had no minor disciplinary infractions, the student is invited to the NHS induction ceremony where they will become an official BSHS NHS chapter member. If a student doesn’t receive the score needed to be a part of BSH NHS, they can re-apply during their  junior year of high school.

NHS members are expected to attend monthly meetings held at Senior High School (typically every 4th Wednesday of the month during the lunch hour). It is at these meetings where NHS members decide service projects, volunteer opportunities, and goals for the NHS. While in the NHS, students must continue to uphold the 4 pillars of the NHS: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Because of this, students must continue to maintain a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5, in addition to completing 10 hours of volunteer service by the end of each academic year.
